The Bill Cosby Show

Mrs. Watson showed my English classes a Bill Cosby episode and asked the class how it related to the class. Bill Cosby's daughter brought home a guy to meet the family that she had been secretly engaged for six months. The family felt embarrassed about the situation because they did not understand what was going on. Their daughter had kept a part of her life a secret from them when she didn't have to. She did not present him in the right way.
This episode relates to our English classes because all of the work we are doing has to have the correct presentation. How you present something will effect everything. The presentation is the key element to an assignment because it is how an assignment is interpreted.

Teaching Swimming Lessons

I work at Lenior Rhyne University every Saturday during the fall and winter teaching swimming lessons. In March I work four nights a week and I love every minute of it. My job is the best and most rewarding job anyone can have. The only bad thing is that just because we swim in an inside pool doesn't mean it is warm. The CVAC or Catawba Valley Aquatics Club swim team is in the pool along with us. They have one half and we use the other half of the pool for swim lessons. The swimmers will get overheated if the pool is not cool so that is why even though it is inside, the pool is still really cold. I feel bad for some of the kids because they are so small and have nothing on their bones to keep them warm. Their teeth start chattering and I try to make them swim enough to keep them warm without getting too tired.
Each class is thirty minutes long and I usually have two or three kids per class. The first twenty minutes we work on teaching the kids free style or id they are little then just basic skill they need for swimming. The next five minutes we work on backstroke. This stroke is most of the kids' favorite because they love learning to float on their backs. The last five minutes we work of dives and jumps with the kids. The kids also get to jump off of the diving boards which are a little bit higher off the ground for them.
I love seeing the children's reactions when they finally accomplish and learn something new. They are so excited and want to show everyone their "new trick". Watching each kid grow and progress as the weeks go by is the best feeling. I feel as if I have helped them and potentially saved their lives. Kids drown every month because they can't swim and i makes me feel good knowing I have helped them and kept their parent's minds at ease.

Thanksgiving and My Family

Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday because I get to spend time with my family. I have a big family and most of them live here, but some of them live hours away. I don't get to see those family members except for three times a year because they work and can't visit often. I love spending as much time with them as I can, and they are always so much fun to be around.
My family goes up to my grandmother's house for lunch every year on Thanksgiving. The house is packed full of people with kids screaming and running around the house. My grandmother makes turkey, ham, and roast. Everyone else brings side dishes and we have a feast! The whole family sits down and eats until we are stuffed. After lunch we all hand around and visit with each other. It is amazing to catch up on what is happening and makes my Thanksgiving special.
Late in the afternoon everyone starts packing up their stuff to go back home. It is always hard for me to say goodbye to everyone since I don't get to see them as often as I would like. My brother and sister still live in Hickory so that makes it a little easier, but I still wish I could see my aunts, uncles, and cousins more. The best part about Thanksgiving is knowing Christmas is right around the corner and I will see them again in a month!

Improving My Writing Skills

I need to examine my writing style with the idea of improving it because I can always use new ideas. There is always room for improvement in every paper I write. Improving my writing skills can help viewers understand what I am saying a lot better. I can write with more flow and relate to the viewers more. Learning new information about writing can put me at an advantage in my English classes and in everyday life. Most of the time I can think of ideas to write about, but I don't know how to elaborate on it or I have trouble writing what I want to say. Every time I start writing I think about my weaknesses in order to make sure I do not mess anything up.

Favorite Movie Genre

My favorite genre of movies are scary or horror movies. I love the excitement and thrill of watching a scary movie. Scary movies are predictable some of the time, but I love them anyways. I can watch a movie twice and still jump at every scary part. My boyfriend and I love to watch horror movies together. He is not bored during during the movie and it gives us a chance to snuggle up close when my dad is around. We pop the popcorn with extra butter and sit down with a fuzzy blanket and start the movie.
It is a rush seeing some of your worst fears being played out on t.v. The old Halloween movies are my favorite. They are classic and still scare me half to death. I love going to the theater and watching other people scream their heads off, even though most of the time I am doing the same thing. You never know what will happen in a horror film. Your heart starts pounding because you feel as if you are in the movie, and you fear for the characters' lives. The horror films will always by my favorite because I will never be bored during them.

My Writing Process

My writing process isn't too complicated. As soon as I get my assignment i start thinking of an idea and whether it is going to be difficult or not. First I change into comfortable clothes and then get my favorite pen and start writing. I take several minutes to think about each paragraph and what information will be used in each paragraph. I tackle one paragraph at a time and make sure it says exactly what I need it to. I make sure my message is clearly stated.
After my first attempt at writing my paper is complete, the next step is revision. Revising is the most important part and takes the longest. I reread my paper over and over to make sure the grammar and sentence structure are correct. My weaknesses are placing commas correctly, wrong word tense, and misspelled words. I take the time to check these certain area twice as much. My final step is typing my paper because for some reason i can not type my paper first. I have to write it out by hand and then type it. I check and read the format of my paper and then turn it in. At that point all I can do is hope I make a good grade!
