Our New Little One

The time has come, we have waited so long,
little one entering the bright loud world.
All are waiting to show that you belong.
Our first peek shows tiny pink fingers curled.
A small sweet innocent face shines brightly.
Beautiful shimmering curls frame your face.
Dark blue eyes that open and close tightly.
A pair of soft pink lips to touch and trace.
You are the princess that makes you dad smile.
Big brother is so protective of you.
Mommy sighs knowing it was all worthwhile,
afraid to touch because you are brand new.
Thank you God for our precious little girl.
You will make life change, be busy, and whirl.

Basketball

I am pretty good at basketball I have a kind of knack.
I can dribble going forwards and I can dribble behind my back.
I can run just like a lightening bolt and beat them down the court
and this is pretty amazing since I am very short.
I am very good at free throws because my brother showed me how,
and now I love to be the one the other team will foul.
I love to shoot some field goals is i ever get the chance,
And I hope to help my team to the big basketball dance.

Poetry

When I hear the word poetry I think of a form of literature that is hard to understand. I don't know if it is the different rhyme schemes, but the words do not seem to pop into my head like they should. I have attempted to read many styles and topics of poetry. The ones I have understood or my teacher's have explained to me, I really like. It is very beautiful and meaningful. There is so much power behind some poems and it is filled with so much emotion and feeling. Other times I think poetry is so boring and I do not have any use for it. Poetry reminds me of high school again. I feel as if I am in the small little classroom with the friends I have grown up with for years, and we are picking apart each line to understand the meaning. Who cares? I have mix feelings about poetry but as long as I can understand it then I don't really mind reading a poem every now and then.

Effects of Divorce on Future Generations

"The Lady with the Dog" by Anton Chekhov is one of my favorite short stories. By reading the story I am reminded of a very important topic in today's society, divorce. Divorce is a subject that should not be taken lightly, but I am afraid that in today's generation it is. In reality, divorce is becoming so common that nobody makes a big deal about it anymore. More people are leaving their husbands and wives and children are being raised by single parents every day.

Chekhov put an important and real meaning behind his story. I do not agree with Anna or Dmitri's actions and I wish they could have found another way to deal with their marital problems. Research shows that many of today's young adults are beginning to marry at a young age. Teenagers think they are in love and want to act older then what they are because they think it is cool, which leads to them jumping into a marriage they are not ready for. In "The Lady with the Dog" it even states that Dmitri might have jumped into a commitment that he was not ready for, "He had been married young, when he was a student in his second year, and by now his wife seemed half as old again as he." Dmitri did not know everything about his wife and I assume some of the bad habits drove him crazy.

Children are the main one affected by divorce. It causes all sorts of emotional and physical problems that they have to learn to deal with. The narrator of the story states, "He was under forty, but he had a daughter already twelve years old, and two sons at school." I wonder how Dmitri's children would react if they knew what their dad had been doing in secret with other women that were not their mother. When Dmitri's children find out about their dad's actions then they will be heartbroken to see a man they look up to treating his family like dirt. Children in today's society usually deal with their pain from a broken family with violence, crime, and drug abuse. Divorce is tearing out future generations apart because the effects of divorce follow them into adulthood. Children who experience divorce in their families tend to have poor math, reading, and spelling skills because they give up on things just like their parents gave up on their marriage.

"The Lady with the Dog" by Anton Chekhov shows me what cheating does to people's lives. I understand that Anna and Dmitri are not happy in their marriages, but there are other ways to go about it. Marriage is the foundation for our future and family. If people keep tossing marriage aside like it is nothing then what kind of message is being sent to the future generations?

Sleeping with a Dead Person?...Really?

"A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner was a little too weird for me. I think the people of the town are absolutely crazy for giving Mrs.Grierson excuses for her house stinking and if I were one of them then I would want to know what was going on. It was pretty obvious what was occurring and her house should have been inspected as soon as one person noticed the horrific smell. There was a reason she did not want anyone going near her house of coming in and I don't see how the people didn't catch on sooner. The fact that she kept the man in a room and bought him stuff just like a living and normal person freaks me out. I do not understand how a person can think the way she did and she had something seriously wrong with her. When a woman starts sleeping in the same bed as a dead man then she needs serious help and I hope see got it.

Wow! What a Shock...

My short story presentation was on "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and as soon as I started reading the story I was a little confused. The story was not what I expected and came as a shock to me. The main character, Mrs. Mallard acted like any normal woman would if she had just been told he husband had past away in a tragic railroad disaster, but then she acted a little out of the ordinary. I was not expecting her to be happy about her husband dying. Mrs. Mallard was so happy to be free and it was like she was a prisoner in her own house and marriage. I did not understand why she was happy until I watched a video and did a little more research on the story. Even though the research states that her marriage was not a good one, these are in fact just opinions of people because Chopin left it up to the readers to come up with their own conclusions and thoughts. I also did not think that Mrs. Mallard would pass away the second her husband walked in the door and she found out he was not dead. I thought the ending would be happy and that the couple would realize why they love each other and stuff like that. Instead, Mrs. Mallard dies because she was so shocked to see her husband and didn't really want him to be alive.

The Good Old Days

The latest and new things are not always better. Every year at Christmas people get so excited over the newest electronics and spend a lot of money to keep up with the new technology. People waste so much gas and precious time running back and forth to the stores trying to get their hands on a fancy phone, tv, ipod, ipad, or computer. Arsenic and Old Lace by Frank Cgora reminds me how sometimes remembering the good old days can bring more happiness. Since people get so wrapped up in the gadgets, then the true meaning of the holidays are lost.
The movie is a lot better since it is in black and white because I am not caught up in how pretty the picture is and I focus on the actual plot of the movie more. Movies that are on the big screen today do not seem to have as much meaning behind them like the older movies. It seems like the only thing the directors care about anymore is how much fighting and killing goes on, or how good the actors or stunt scenes look. Arsenic and Old Lace is a movie that has a twist and takes a depressing topic then turns it into something funny and comical. I have never seen or heard of this movie before but I was noticing it was it black and white and I thought it would be lame. To my surprise the movie is really good and I can’t wait to come to class and see what happens next!
The Brewster family is crazy which adds to the whole plot of the movie. Even Mortimer Brewster, one of the main characters thinks they are crazy, “Insanity runs in my family. It practically gallops.” The actions of the Brewster sisters and Teddy make the movie much more interesting. I am flying on the edge of my seat the whole time because I never know what will happen. Aunt Abby and Martha are so funny because they are two sweet ladies and it looks like they cannot hurt a fly. On the other hand they have killed 12 men by poisoning them with wine. The two women think they are doing the men a favor and don’t understand when Mortimer tries to tell them differently, “There is a body in the window seat! Yes dear, we know.” When the two sisters respond the way they do, then Mortimer does not quite know how to tell them what they’re doing can get them in serious trouble; “This is developing into a very bad habit! I don’t know if I can explain it to you. It’s not only against the law, its wrong!”  Mortimer running around trying to fixed everything makes the whole movie brilliant. He is the only one in the family who is normal, but in the end he makes himself look like the insane one.
I always hear older people talking about the good old days and about how society has changed so much since they were kids. It was better back then because people actually talked to each other face to face instead of always texting or using technology to communicate. Arsenic and Old Lace by Frank Cgora shows that just because it is in black and white does not mean it is a good movie or have a good plot behind it. I learned that I like the older movies just as good if not better then the movies around today. I will not judge a movie by its color again.
